En route

Departure

Thursday morning. We leave for the ferry. Everything worked well with the Mustang. This was an Iceland trip I will remember a long time. I met many nice Icelanders resp. met friends again and had a nice time.
I could only report about a small part of the journey here and give just some pictures as impressions, not speaking of many video recordings I did.
Time for working this out is not much or from August on, because on July 16th I will land again in Iceland und then we go with the offroad car to the highland. Finally Iceland again!
:-)
I’ll publish more pictures and videos from the journey later on this website. Best regards from Uwe Reimann

The last day in Iceland :-(

On wednesday we had again a little highlight, even if controversial: The Mustang at the Kárahnjúkar dam. Since the building time the road is bituminised and we could go to the highland with the Mustang. I’ve been there 2004 already. Now there is a lake, but smaller than I thought. The mountain “Sandfell” which was a viewpoint to the building area at that time, now is an island in the lake. That’s quite heavy what was built there. Also the aluminium smelter factory in Reyðarfjörður is huge for the circumstances there.

After that we hiked about 1,5 hours to the Hengifoss, which was covered mostly in clouds meanwhile.

In the east fjords

Since monday evening we are in the east fjords and stay in a hut at Eskifjörður. This is the last part of our journey. The Mustang attracts attention also here. Here at the huts there are some evening events from the village. There are from time to time people coming and having a closer look to the Mustang.

It's not so lonely as it seems at the Mjoeyri cottages

On Tuesday we made smaller excursions to the neighbour fjords, in the evening to Neskaupstaður for the swimming pool and the “Páskahellir”. By driving through the village we discovered an old Mustang and lined up for a photo:

Continue to lake Mývatn

So, the car days in Akureyri are over. Car show, Burn out, Drag race, Drift competition and cruising around through the city took place. I only took part in the car show and the cruising and watched the drag race.
Now we are at lake Myvatn, the lake with the many flies. On every tour with the Mustang the yellow car becomes more and more black in the front ; -)
On the first evening we drove to the Krafla vulcano for making futuristic pictures and videos. Iceland has build a geothermal power plant here.
Whale watching in Husavík we did on Sunday and today on Monday evening we continue to the east fjords to Eskifjörður. There we have rented a hut to spend the last 3 days and nights of this journey to Iceland.

Race between Saleen Mustang and Airplane in Akureyri (updated)

On saturday at noon we had actually planned to go to the art museum of Akureyri. After that we wanted to watch the Drag Race and then continue our journey to lake Myvatn. But at noon a Mustang driver called us, that something special will happen at the airport and we should go there. First it remained unclear to us, but then we saw that there was an open day at the airport and its museum. Two machines made acrobatic flights. One of the highlights should be a race between a Porsche (maybe a Cayenne GTS) and one of those strongly motorized acrobatics airplanes. For any reason the Porsche could not go from Reykjavik to Akureyri, so one of the Mustangdrivers from the car show was asked. Hilmar with the Saleen Mustang modified to 700 hp agreed to make the race. The video below shows it. Of course it was a race just for show, but the audience and the driver were enthusiastic. In Iceland there is a speed limit of 90 km/h everywhere and now Hilmar the first time got the chance to really drive his car (nearly) to the maximum. He did 240 km/h and was enthusiastic that he was only in the fifth gear of six.

The car show in Akureyri

Thursday, 17. June: That was an extraordinary day of our trip. From 11 am to 9 pm we were part of the car show in Akureyri. We got to know with some Mustang drivers, who we also met on Friday for a small barbecue and a small drive around Akureyri. More than 3000 visitors came to the car show. 250 vehicles were shown inlcuding american cars of all types, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes and even some trucks. One thing I didn’t see at this day: tourists. The event was visited only by Icelanders. Because of time reasons here just some pictures.
On saturday our journey continues to Myvatn.

Preparation of the cars on Wednesday evening. Here somebody is polishing the wheels

Preparation for the car show at the National Day

We’ve arrived in Akureyri and met one of the organizers of many car events, which will take place here from Thursday on. Our Mustang will be shown together with many other (mainly american) cars in the soccer hall of Akureyri. It could be the car with the farest travel, if not anybody came from the USA ; -)
The car is already in the hall and the exhibition is on Thursday between 11 a.m. und 9 p.m.

The Mustang should of course be clean for the show

On the way to Akureyri

16.06.2010, 12:00 GMT: We are on the way to Akureyri and have a small stoppover at the N1-Station at Brú. Here is a Wifi, so I can make a short update of my Blog. Tomorrow there’s a car show in Akureyri (National Day of Iceland) and we are a part of it.

In Reykjavík

Today (14.6.) I only give two impressions from Reykjavík. A photo from the Perlan and a cruise through the main shopping street “Laugavegur” in the heart of Reykjavík.

Arrival in Reykjavík

This afternoon we arrived in Reykjavík and visited look to the Flea Market already. If our hotel has an internet connection, I can post some nice photos of the last days this evening. The Mustang already attracted attention on Laugavegur (city center) and was photographed by some people.

This evening we had a small meeting of Mustangs. A Mustang driver from Reykjavík with whom I had contact before my journey, came to our hotel. He gave me a poster of the Icelandic Mustang Club as present.  We examined our cars of course and drove to a little photo session. Very nice, thank you Kjartan!
